2016-10-10
On 27-28 September
2016, Sir Philip Sales, Lord Justice of Appeal at the UK Court of Appeal, gave two
lectures at the Centre for Common Law, the first on common law methodology and
the second on the reception of international law.
In his first lecture, Sir
Philip discussed several aspects of how the common law method operates in the
UK from the judge’s point of view, such as how a common law judge decides a
case, as well as how a judge identifies, interprets and applies a legal rule or
principle from previous cases.
In the second lecture,
Sir Philip discussed the different forms of international law, the reception of
treaty obligations into domestic law, both incorporated and unincorporated
treaties, as well as customary international law.
The Frontiers of Law Seminars are a series of
lectures organised by the Centre for Common Law, with both Chinese and
international speakers sharing their knowledge and expertise on common
law-related subjects.
