CCL establishes Academic Advisory Council

The inaugural meeting of the Academic Advisory Council of the Centre for Common Law at Renmin University of China Law School was held on 25 November 2016, in Beijing.

The Council is led by two presidents: Xiao Yang (former President of the Chinese Supreme People’s Court) and Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers (former President of the UK Supreme Court and former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales). It has ten members – five on each side – and all eminent scholars, jurists or lawyers in their respective countries. The members are:

UK side

  1. Lord Phillips, former UK Supreme Court President and former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales (co-President)
  2. Sir Jeffrey Jowell, founder-director of the Bingham Centre for Rule of Law
  3. Professor Michael Palmer, School of Oriental and African Studies
  4. Marina Wheeler QC, barrister, 1 Crown Office Row
  5. Professor Timothy Endicott, former dean of the University of Oxford Faculty of Law

 

Chinese side

  1. Xiao Yang, former Supreme People’s Court President (President)
  2. Zhang Wenxian, Vice-President of the China Law Society
  3. Hu Yunteng, President of the Supreme People’s Court 2nd Circuit Court
  4. Professor Wang Chenguang, former dean of Tsinghua University Law School

5.       Professor Zhu Jingwen, Renmin University of China

At the meeting, the members were presented with their letters of appointment and each gave suggestions on the development of the centre and possible topics for future research.

The Academic Advisory Council provides the Centre for Common Law with strategic advice and experience.
