Topic: Details of the the judiciary – Observing the operation
of the modern judicial system in the context of small claims cases in the US.
Speaker: Zhou Dawei, Distinguished Fellow at the Legal
Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and visiting professor at the Beijing
Institute of Technology Law School
The small claims system originated from the developed
countries of Europe and the United States. In recent decades, despite the fact
that academic circles have argued over the paradigm and efficiency of small
claims cases, an indisputable fact is that the pattern of small claims is being
borrowed by more and more countries and regions (including Hong Kong, Taiwan etc.).
The trend of saving judicial resources and improving trial efficiency has
become a difficult path for any country to turn away from in this age of economic
globalisation. In this lecture, Prof. Zhou will analyse the details of the rule
of law based on his experiences in the US.
